As the leaves turn golden and the nights draw in, October offers more than just pumpkin spice and cosy jumpers—it’s also the perfect time to press pause on alcohol and give your body a well-deserved break. Welcome to Go Sober for October.
A 31-day alcohol-free nationwide challenge that takes place every October to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support. It’s a chance to give your body a break, reset your relationship with alcohol, and stand in solidarity with people living with cancer. What started as a simple fundraising idea has grown into a powerful health and social movement.
What is Go Sober for October?
At its heart, Go Sober for October is about replacing your usual drink with purpose. Participants pledge to give up alcohol for the entire month and use the challenge to raise money for Macmillan’s vital cancer care services. The initiative promotes reflection on drinking habits, encourages physical and mental wellness, and provides real-time support to people going through some of life’s toughest moments.
Why Go Sober?
Alcohol is woven into the fabric of British social life. From weekend pints to celebratory champagne, it’s easy to underestimate how much we’re drinking. But even moderate alcohol consumption can impact your:
- Sleep quality
- Mental health
- Liver function
- Immune system
- Risk of cancer and heart disease
- By going alcohol-free for 31 days, you give your body a chance to reset—and you might be surprised by how good you feel.
The Benefits of a Booze-Free Month
People who take part in Sober October often report:
- Better sleep and more energy
- Weight loss and clearer skin
- Improved mood and mental clarity
- A sense of achievement and control
And if you’re raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support while doing it, you’re helping others too. You can sign up or donate at Macmillan’s Go Sober page.
How Much Is Too Much?
There is in fact no safe limit for alcohol although the NHS recommends a maximum of 14 units of alcohol per week, spread over three or more days. That’s roughly six pints of beer or six medium glasses of wine. But many of us drink more than we realise. Try this alcohol unit calculator to see where you stand.
