What is Chicken Pox?
Chicken pox, caused by the varicella-zoster virus, is a highly contagious disease characterized by an itchy rash, fever, and fatigue. While it is often mild in children, it can lead to serious complications such as bacterial infections, pneumonia, and encephalitis.
How can I protect my child?
The chicken pox vaccine, known as the varicella vaccine, is highly effective in preventing the disease. It not only protects the vaccinated child but also helps in achieving herd immunity, reducing the spread of the virus within the community. Vaccinated children who do contract chicken pox typically experience milder symptoms and recover more quickly.
In the UK, the chicken pox vaccine is not part of the routine childhood immunisation schedule but is available privately. It is recommended for children who have not had chicken pox, especially those who are in close contact with individuals at higher risk of severe disease, such as newborns, pregnant women, and immunocompromised individuals.
When can my child have the vaccine?
The vaccine can be administered to children from the age of 9 months. It is given in two doses to ensure optimal immunity and long-term protection against the virus.
The following intervals apply, depending on your child’s age:
Children from 9 to 12 months of age:
Where vaccination is indicated between 9 and 12 months of age, a second dose is needed and should be given a minimum interval of 3 months after the first dose.
Children from 12 months to 12 years of age
For individuals from 12 months to 12 years of age, at least 4 weeks must elapse between the first and second dose.
Adolescents and adults from 13 years of age and above
Two doses with the second dose at least 6 weeks after the first dose.
